I don’t tell women how to age gracefully. I show them how to age powerfully.
HI, I’M BARBARA
Here’s the truth: turning 50 scared me. I didn’t know what was coming next, and most of what I read about women and aging seemed to be preparing me for a long, slow fade. So I did what I’ve done my whole life when I don’t know something — I started asking questions.

Then my 60s arrived — and brought a whole new set of questions with them. Suddenly it wasn’t just how do I stay fit? It was: How do I protect my bones? How do I hold on to muscle, balance, memory, energy? What really matters now — and what’s just noise? Nobody hands you a manual for this decade. So I went looking for the people writing it. Every week on my podcast, AGE BETTER, I sit down with the world’s leading doctors and scientists and ask them the only question that matters: what actually works? Then I turn their answers into steps you can take right now. More than 200 episodes later, we’re ranked in the top 5% of all podcasts globally — which tells me I’m not the only one who was hungry for real answers. And now you can watch as well as listen: every episode, plus short clips of the best moments, lives on my growing YouTube channel — because sometimes you want to see the conversation, not just hear it.
I’ve been a contributor to AARP since 2012, where I write the “Fix Your Body” column for AARP the Magazine, and every week I send out the Age Better Cheat Sheet on Substack — the best of what the experts tell me, in the five minutes it takes to drink your coffee. Right now I’m at work on my third book, written for women in their 60s — because that’s the decade I’m living, and the one I’m asking the most questions about.
Listen. Watch. Read. However you take it in, my promise is the same: real science, real steps, no fairy dust.
My first two books helped start this whole journey. The Best of Everything After 50 was among the earliest to argue that a woman’s later decades are hers to command — I believed it then, and I’ve spent every year since proving it. Love Your Age: The Small Step Solution to a Better, Longer, Happier Life, published jointly by National Geographic and AARP, became an award-winning guide to reinventing midlife one small step at a time.
But here’s the thing about learning what the science says: once you know, you can’t just talk about it. Bone health became my cause. I spent ten years on the Board of Trustees of the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation, including the Executive Committee, and today I’m honored to serve as the Foundation’s Special Advisor. In 2017, I created the “Be Bone Strong” Team — BHOF’s official charity team at the NYC Marathon, the world’s largest — and I’ve been its Team Captain every year since, with teams now running Sydney and Berlin too. And because you shouldn’t need a marathon to build strong bones, in 2025 I founded the “Be Bone Strong” Walking Clubs, starting with our first club in Virginia Beach and growing across the country.
Along the way I’ve shared what I’ve learned on TODAY, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, Live with Kelly & Ryan, Dr. Phil, The Doctors, The Talk, NPR, SiriusXM Doctor Radio and stations nationwide — and with audiences across the country, talking about health, fitness, and what it takes to age on your own terms.
And yes — I practice every word of it. I took up running at 50, when the idea of a single mile felt impossible. Seventeen marathons and one ultra-marathon later, I’m training for #18 right now. If you’d told me that at 49, I would have laughed. That’s exactly why I tell you.
Before all this, I was President of World Congress, a global conference firm, after years as a senior executive in magazine publishing — a career spent asking smart people good questions, which turns out to have been the perfect training.
I’m a native New Yorker and the mother of two grown daughters, and I split my time between New York City and Virginia Beach with my husband, Howard, and Pete, our Brittany, adopted through Brittany Rescue in Texas — my everyday walking partner and the least stressed member of the family.
